Friday-Sunday Austria

July 03-05, 1964

Friday, July 3; 5:50 AM took off for Austria. Up since 4:30 AM. Sun was out then. It gets light at 3:30 AM here. Stopped at Neunkirchen (about 24 miles before Salzburg)- very tiny — interesting town — church so ancient and beautiful surrounded by graveyard. Many graves with pictures on them…

Houses seem more Switzerland than Switzerland. So pretty with window boxes full of bright flowers — love Bavarian style!!

Finished lunch at park Platz on autobahn and on our way again 11:45 AM. Crossed Austrian border at 12:00 PM sharp. Just by chance saw the town of Bindenmarkt and stopped to look up the Rechenmacher’s cousin. A wonderful farm family. We had such a nice time and they treated us like relatives. Fixed supper for us and even wanted us to stay for the night.

We got to Vienna about 7:00 PM our pension Carina was on Mariahilfer Strasse. We had one room on the 2nd floor and 2 on 4th.  I am sure getting the strong leg muscles. Got settled — dinner — to bed

Saturday, July 4; Vienna was a great disappointment to me. I thought it old and drab. Some of the buildings and statues were of fine architecture but so grey and dirty looking.

Saturday, we met up with the Beltz and Meili and Sue and Bill arrived at 1:00 PM. We all had dinner together at Rats Haus Kellar. Very good. Then it rained. We went with Beltz to concert place — heard some Viennese music — sipped some of the new Wien and off to bed.

Sunday, July 5; Church Sunday at St. Stephan’s. Beautiful Choir. Spent afternoon at Prater amusement park — highlight of the last 4 months for the kindred. Ferris wheel is the largest in the world — 210 feet tall — built in 1897 for 1900 World’s Fair. Cars are enclosed like streetcars — you can walk around and view from all sides during the slow 10-minute revolution. Too high for me!!

Sunday night we fed the kinder early and went to dinner with the Beltz. Saturday afternoon we had close the stores at 1:00 PM and then took 3-hour tour — the best part of this was the tour of Schönbrunn castle home of Maria Theresa (16 children one of which was Marie Antoinette). Napoleon had been here to and his 2nd wife was an Austrian prince. His only son died in this palace at age 21.

On whole Vienna was a great Disappointment.
