be lucky. The weather was cool and roads (twisty and windy) were not too crowded. Arrive Rome Monday

Monday, August 10; 12 noon. Took us an hour and a half to find Adoratrices Convent where we are staying. It is wonderfully. A dormitory for us with more room than we can imagine. On the 4th floor. Oh, my legs. There is an elevator to the 3rd floor whenever you happen to have 10 lire in change. Money is horrible to use. Bills are immense and worth so little – 16 lire to our dollar — prices are all in 1000s. Makes everything seem so high this way. When I go home, I may think everything is cheap when it is not. Even Germany has 4 marks to $1.00.

Meals in convent are good and many Americans are staying here. Really an ideal set up with our large family ($22 a day — 3 meals included). There is a water shortage in Rome — A mite inconvenient. We have 4 toilets up here for our dorm and 4 sinks but must go to the third floor for hot water and some days no water for toilets — use buckets full. Meals at 7 AM to 9 AM — 1 PM — 7 PM. Keeps us running.
