Thursday-Saturday Munich
April 30-May 02, 1964
Thursday, April 30; I’m so far behind! This was the dance at officers’club for opening and renovated Emperor Room — very nice! Susan went with Bill Myles. We sat at table with Tom and Mary Lyons and friends. Had a wonderful time and music was wonderful! I could have danced all night.
Friday, May 1; Up and ready for Munich trip. Jack Myles went with us so Sue and Cynthia rode in his car with him. Weather was nice and not “so nice” all the way…

Wymanns passed us on autobahn on the way to Munich. We found a hotel that could house us all and got settled. Then rode to Dachau to view the shrine there. It is quite beautiful now with trees, grass, and flowers. The ovens and gas chambers are made up like shrines with perpetual wreaths and flowers around them. I did not like it much
We went to dinner in München (why do we Americans call at Munich!) After children were all bedded down (Susan included — she was exhausted). Jack, Cynthia, Jimmy and I went to the famous Hofbräuhaus for a taste of their night life.
They serve beer in the biggest mugs ever and no smaller sizes available. The bottom floor was really full of riff-raff — the middle for dining — the top floor was not nearly as nice as everyone had led me to believe. Maybe I’m getting too old for Bavarian night life!
Saturday, May 2; Jack — Jimmy — Kevin — Pat — Jamie to famous museum. The rest of us to shop. Saw the Glaukenspiel at 11:00 AM and it was so cute. Some of the figures dancing looked real. Shopping in a large city, with Klein Kinder (all they wanted was the toy store) on a Saturday is not for me. We had lunch and then Sue and Cynthia went their separate way. We found a toy store after much walking plus a ride to the top of the cathedral to look over the whole city. As usual — I was petrified and the children delighted. By chance we met up with the girls again and all struck out in search of streetcar line. On our way went into a cathedral and to our delight it was a real beauty.
Outside in the square we heard a band and here we found not one but two German Army bands. One would play a snappy American tune (River Quai — Saints Come Marching In — St. Louis Woman, etc.) and the other alternated with classical. We sat there in this ancient Platz with all the historical buildings around us — people in lederhosen and Bavarian clothing — the band vibrating in the square — and church bells ringing for 10 minutes straight. Now I felt in Europe!
That night Susan and Jack went out — Cynthia was the tired one and after children were fed bedded. Jimmy and I have quiet dinner and to bed. We were exhausted.
