We got in Berlin (without reservations) at 1:30 AM and drove around 2 hours with no success. We even tried Berlin Hilton and they called for us. We ended up spending the night with our sleeping bags and blankets in the cold bus. After the night in bus anything was okay by us. Three girls stayed at one — the rest of us the other. People and rooms were so nice!! We got our hair set, cleaned up, out to lunch and then viewed the WALL. An unbelievable thing right thru the center of Berlin. Then we drove to checkpoint Charlie and went touring East Berlin. Check point was most interesting. Allied soldiers laughed when we left our names with them, but we weren’t too sure of whole thing. East German soldiers were very nice to us but we all had to get out of the car here and wait — took about 45 minutes again waiting her turn. We took cameras — binoculars, etc. with us but Jimmy had to take funny books back to Allied check point. They wouldn’t allow us to take them in. East Berlin was a veritable ghost town — there was no paint or repairs or new buildings in over 20 years. Hardly a car was seen and suspect the few we saw what tourists like ourselves. Very few people were around and I wondered if the few we saw when not tourists.
We did see some children playing in groups. All in all, it was an unbelievable desolate sight. Ended up getting lost in West Berlin and late before we found our hotel again so fed little ones in the room, (hot dogs) and Jimmy took rest to Berlin Hilton Smorgas-table (they were disappointed in the food). I went to bed with little ones — exhausted.
