Friday-Saturday
May 29-30, 1964
Friday, May 29; Jimmy went into IBM and home at 9 AM. We left for Switzerland about 9:30 AM. Weather was lovely.
A very nice trip and fun to cross another border. Switzerland is a beautiful country. We stayed just below Zürich in Bremgarten at Krone Hotel. Such lovely clean rooms and so …

reasonable 58 Swiss Fr. plus service charge. We used 3 sleeping bags and had 3 rooms. Dinner was delicious. Had cheese fondue. It was served in a brazier with a flame to keep it hot. Sue — Theresa — and I tried. It was a thick cheese sauce. We had long forks on which we speared the bread and dunked it in the cheese sauce.
After dinner we took a walk across the covered bridge to a church bazaar. The children all got “taken” with the grab bag but we had fun buying a few goodies at the “used” counter. Antiques or junk?!! Theresa got a beautiful lavender mohair sweater for 30 Swiss-franc (about $6.50).
Went home for a restful sleep but didn’t have it! This was the noisiest hotel! We were on a busy street and there was noise from outside AND inside!!
Saturday, May 30; Bill arrived before we were up. He got a room in the Krone, too. We bought some rolls in Backerei and milk and all had breakfast together by the river. Sue and Bill took off for the day and the rest of us headed for Bern. A very ancient and lovely city. Downtown sidewalks are all covered and buildings are built to the edge.
We had lunch in a beautiful park after I had created quite an incident downtown by paddling Tim and Holly in the back of the bus. — An experience I shall never forget and can’t quite put in writing!! I had twisted my ankle on the cobblestones Saturday morning and by Saturday afternoon it was really began to hurt.
We ate back at the Krone and after 2 phenol barbs — 2 beers and soaking my foot — I slept thru all the noise – even the band for the wedding reception on the floor below. Food was so good at the Krone.
